Japan

Five years of Japan.

Between big city and nature: working, travelling and living like a local. From Hokkaido to Okinawa – on foot, by car, by motorbike and with plenty of curiosity.

01

Across all of Japan

My first trip to Japan in 2017 excited me so much that I had to go back. When I later heard about the working holiday visa, I took the chance for a whole year in Japan – and it turned into five years of living, working and travelling there.

I spent longer stretches in single regions, was outdoors a lot and often travelled on a whim. The map shows where I lived, worked and travelled.

Travel highlights

Some of the trips that shaped that time most. Each had its own pace, its own people and small routines that only settled in after a few days.

Hokkaido

21-day long-distance hike in Hokkaido

A hike of several weeks through the north of Japan, mostly sleeping in a tent. Lots of untouched nature, long stages and two surprise encounters with bears on remote mountain trails.

Okinawa

Three weeks of Okinawa and island hopping

A subtropical climate, crystal-clear water and a very different pace from the main islands. Snorkelling, small harbours and a lot of culture.

Kyushu

Hitchhiking through Kyushu

Hitchhiking along country roads, spontaneous invitations to dinner and unexpected detours. Conversations that would never have happened on the bullet train.

Honshu · Hokkaido

Road trips by car and motorbike

Flexible routes, remote coastal roads and small mountain passes inland. Handy for reaching places where buses hardly run any more.

03

Moments

Places and moments that stayed with me.

01Tokyo

Tokyo at night

Neon, narrow alleys, quiet side streets and packed stations – the later it gets, the clearer the mix of speed and everyday life.

02Honshu

Riding through cherry blossom season

Roads full of blossoms, mild temperatures and the first warm days of the year – perfect for easy rides through the country.

03Kyoto Prefecture

Mountain viewpoint above Amanohashidate

My favourite spot: quiet mornings, a view over the sandbar and a place I kept coming back to.

04Nikko

Hiking in the mountains

Long roads through quiet nature and a touch of Austria in the surroundings – a place that feels familiar at once.

05Kōya-san · Osaka

A night in a temple

A quiet night in a temple on Kōya-san – sutras, mist and breakfast at dawn.

06Gifu

The old village of Shirakawago

Traditional gasshō houses, a quiet village feel and an atmosphere from another time.
